47 beers were awarded at Greek Beer Awards

The Greek brewing scene proved once again that it is on the rise with beers from two microbreweries being distinguished as top at this year’s Greek Beer Awards

During the World of Beer Festival, took place the awarding of the Greek Beer Awards for 2024 on Friday, May 10 at Innovathens in Technopolis. On the first day of the festival all the lights were on the annual appointment of the announcement of the winners of the different types and categories of beer. Entries exceeded 100, with 47 of them winning an award and 10 of them in their first entry. The Greek Beer Awards is an international competition addressed to breweries from Southeast and Eastern Europe, as well as to breweries from Mediterranean countries, 32 countries in total. The experienced judges, invited from abroad, evaluated the beers in a blind tasting last March in Athens.

Greek beers also dominated this year’s Greek Beer Awards, receiving 31 of the 47 awards, with the remaining 16 going to breweries from Bulgaria, Italy, Cyprus, Republic of Türkiye and Poland. Gold awards were given to beers from all over Greece, such as Skinpa Imperial Stout 10 months aged in Bourbon Barrels from Standard Microbrewery of Thessaloniki, Mikonu Fragos’ko from Mykonos Brewing Company, Pils Hellas from Hellenic Brewery of Atalanti, Ladyhawke from the nomadic Midnight Circus Gypsy Brewing, Methia Blonde Ale from the nomadic Valtinger in Chalkidiki. Voreia Pils from Siris Craft Brewery, which emerged as the top bottom-fermented, receiving the Top Lager distinction, and “8th Day” from Septem Microbrewery based in Avlonari in Evia, which was also distinguished as the top top-fermented, receiving the Top Ale distinction.

The Cypriot presence was also important with P&P Prokopiou Trading, IM Brewing and LSG Prime Microbrewery receiving awards in categories that declared participation. Polish brewery Browar Trzech Kumpli got the most awards overall. On the other hand, beers from Greek islands received 12 awards, with Cretan Candia Beer receiving 2, Mykonos Brewing Company 3 awards and each from the following receiving 1 award inlcuding Slow Down from Ikaria, Raven based in Leros and Andrus based in Andros. The rest were received by Septem Microbrewery and Elixi Microbrewery, both from Evia.

During the awards, videos with the judges’ statements and from the week of their stay in Attica as part of the “Judges Experiences” initiative to promote alternative tourism -beer tourism and wine tourism- to the participants, were shown. The evening was presented by Myrsini Spaneli, barlady and brand ambassador for the Greek Grace Gin and LKC company, who was surrounded by her elite colleagues, creating a lively atmosphere, and proving that beer and bars are inextricably linked.

The Greek Beer Awards concluded for 2024 with great success, as the hall was filled to the brim with representatives of the brewing, bartending and entertainment industries. Registration for 2025 will begin on July 29, with new beer categories being added to the already existing 41, as well as the opening of the event in 2 new countries.

The Greek Beer Awards are held under the auspices of the Ministry of Tourism, Region of Attica and the Hellenic-Italian Chamber of Athens. Fermentis by Lesaffre was the Sponsor of the Greek Beer Awards 2024.

About the Greek Beer Awards

The Greek Beer Awards is the only international beer competition after a blind tasting in Greece. It took place for the first time in 2017 and in 2023 it was extended to countries in South-Eastern and Eastern Europe as well as the Mediterranean. Breweries, microbreweries and nomadic breweries participate in the competition, sending their samples to be tasted by experienced and renowned judges from abroad, who are specially invited for this purpose to Greece. With the motto: “We support good brews since 2017”, the Greek annual beer institution aims, among other things, to bring Greek beers into contact with the rest of the world and to unite the beer communities in the respective countries.
